Venture Canoes have 5 key models the Hunter, prospector 15, Prospector 16, Ranger 14 & Ranger 16. They are a British company who strive to produce good quality canoes that are very durable and lightweight. The plastic in which they make these canoes is called corelite – which produces what are possibly the lightest rotomoulded polyethylene canoes in the world! The Prospectors are based around the age old design of … yes you guessed it the Prospector! It is a design which is hard to beat in terms of all round performance, it allows the paddler(s) to efficiently paddle long distances with a substantial load as well as being one of the better all round canoes for some fairly meaty whitewater.

The Rangers are a confidence inspiring design with a fairly flat hull which offers solid stability. The 14 is compact and easy to paddle solo or as a lightweight pair. The 16 offers extra room for kit and can take two paddlers very comfortably. They are all rounders which would handle some slight rapids should the paddler be faced with them.

The Hunter is designed for long distance touring at 17’ 6” it is stable and fast. It also carries one hefty load with over 500kg capacity! If you are looking for a comfortable 3 seater, this is a great boat for you. It may be long and designed for distance, but don’t forget that it will also be great as a family day out boat (requiring less effort for more distance)

Canoeing is a growing sport, year on year more people take it up especially in these times of financial worry. It is a relatively cheap sport when compared to any other which involves world travel or equipment that needs replacing. A canoe is typically a open topped boat which in most cases has 2 seats and is between 14 and 17 foot. This is by no means the extent of seating and sizing, but in terms of family or recreational use, this is what you get.

Rough rules of thumb to follow are:
14 foot is great for solo use and some tandem paddling with little gear
15 foot is still fantastic solo but better suited to tandem paddling with a bit of kit
16 foot can seat up to three but is ideal for two and camping kit
17 foot + is where you can get a family of 4 in or expedition paddling.

Smaller boats may be more nimble, but less quick and straight running, longer canoes will be faster and straighter – bear this in mind when deciding on what you will be doing with the canoe.
The shapes of the Hull (bottom of the canoe) can also be very important when choosing.

Flat bottoms feel the most stable, with little wobble they like to sit upright – e.g Old Town Discovery 158

Shallow Arch Hulls are slightly more rounded but allow the canoe to hold an edge better and this allows for better manoeuvrability – e.g. Old Town Charles River

Shallow V Hulls offer a keel line when the boat is upright, this can give greater speed and better tracking, but also has a shorter waterline when on the edge of the Vs to allow for better handling. E.g Mad river Explorer

Rounded hulls can be very wobbly to sit in, they are fast and also very versatile, however they can feel too unstable to many beginners – a less extreme but popular example would be a We no nah Prospector.

Rocker is the curve a boat has from end to end – generally more rocker = more manoeuvrability.
